The Mille Miglia: A Journey Through Time

A Special Saturday

Saturday, June 15th was a special day for me. Just one kilometer from my house, I had the fortune of seeing the magnificent Mille Miglia cars pass by. It was an exhilarating sight, taking me back in time to when these vehicles dominated the roads.

The History of the Mille Miglia

The Mille Miglia is one of the most famous and historic car races in the world. Its first edition took place in 1927, thanks to the initiative of four car enthusiasts from Brescia: Giovanni Canestrini, Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi, and Renzo Castagneto. Originally, the race was a speed competition on open roads, covering a distance of about 1600 kilometers (hence the name Mille Miglia), from Brescia to Rome and back.

The race was held annually until 1957, when it was suspended due to a tragic accident. However, in 1977, the Mille Miglia was revived as a regularity race for historic cars, keeping alive the spirit and tradition of the past.

The Mille Miglia and Verona

Every year, the Mille Miglia passes through Verona, a city that offers a perfect backdrop for these historic cars. Participants often make a stop in Villafranca or Valeggio sul Mincio, at the Parco Giardino Sigurtà. These locations not only warmly welcome the drivers but also allow spectators to admire the cars up close and experience a unique event.
